Fake Radio

Just before the magic of generative AI was unleashed on the world, I spent a year or so amusing myself with an art series called Fake Radio on Instagram.

Each image is an album cover from an imaginary band, often coming complete with liner notes and back story.

You can view the whole series on my Instagram page, or read a bizarre interview I did with myself about the project below.

Q: Soooo... What's with this whole Fake Radio thing?

A: The short answer is Fake Radio is an art series depicting imaginary artists producing imaginary music. It's a fun side project that gives me a break from a pretty intense work load.

Q: Ok, I'll bite. What's the long answer then?

A: Well despite giving up on the idea of being a professional musician 20 years ago to focus on design, I still spend a lot of time thinking about the creative process behind conceiving, recording and publishing music. Like many career 'creatives' who work freelance or remotely, music is often my only friend for long stretches of the day / night so it forms a significant part of my own process.

Q: You like music, but you sucked at making it, so now you're a wannabe rockstar, is that right?

A: Deep down I think everyone has a tiny rockstar dream in them somewhere. These images are just my way of living that out with the other skills I've developed over 20+ years as a designer.

Q: Fair enough. So how many of these do you plan to make?

A: I'm really not sure. I guess I'll stop when I get bored with the idea, but right now I'm having a blast just making things with no client or objective in mind.

Q: Wait, you don't have an objective for this project? Surely you want to rack up lots of followers and become a gazillionaire like @beeple_crap or @themostfamousartist?

A: A few people have nudged me to mint these as NFT's and I might do that at some point but a) Designing Web3 protocol interfaces is actually my day job so I don't really want to mix that with my fun stuff and b) The reason Beeps and Matty do so well is those guys genuinely love what they do and have been putting out amazing work forever, regardless of who is watching... Showing up consistently is what matters.

Q: Thanks for your time, Murray.

A: No worries, cheers Murray.
