What’s the point having a great website if you need someone else to update it?

Over the past 20+ years, I’ve raised over $30M, built the biggest tech event in the Southern Hemisphere and designed literally hundreds of brands, websites, apps and merch for projects all over the world.

None of that would have been possible without the ability to make a few quick edits to a website along the way.

Almost every time I speak at an event or on a podcast, I get asked a similar question:

What advice would you give to any new or aspiring entrepreneurs / creatives / designers / artists in the audience right now?

The best advice I can give you is learn how to make basic edits to your own simple website.

Of course, this is the exact opposite of what I should be saying, right? Surely web design agencies make lots of money by editing websites for people who don’t understand how to do it themselves?

Yep. And that’s exactly why I don’t run a web design agency. I can’t think of anything worse, to be perfectly honest.

Yes, I’ve built hundreds of websites over the past two decades and yes, I will happily design you an award-winning, mind-blowing, sh*t-hot website, app or brand if that’s what you really want, but I’ll charge A LOT of money for it and you won’t learn anything along the way.

A business model that relies on you staying stupid

The challenges of traditional web development

Just like lawyers, mechanics and hundreds of other categories, many time-based, traditional service providers leave us feeling just good enough to feel better, but never actually fixed.

Relying on external resources limits our control and personal agency. Unless you’re willing to learn about web development, it’s difficult to understand the technical jargon and make informed decisions about basic design and functionality. This can lead to a sense of helplessness and frustration, which is exactly why we keep paying others to make it better.

In addition to the time and cost factors, traditional web development methods can also pose security risks. If your website is built and maintained by an external party, you may be vulnerable to data breaches or other security threats. This can have serious consequences for your business, both financially and reputationally.

Imagine the frustration of waiting weeks or even months for a simple website update, only to find that the changes don't quite meet your expectations.

Or consider the small business owner who just wants to change the price for a single item. Often, they’ll contact the original developer, wait for them to schedule the work, and then pay a potentially hefty fee for the update. That’s if the dev hasn’t found a new job in the meantime!

MY PLATFORM OF CHOICE

Why I build with Squarespace

Rapid Fire Brief

Step 1

Help me understand exactly what you need by clicking the button below and answering a few simple questions.

While it’s always nice to jump on a quick Zoom call to go over your answers, this is rarely required due to various timezones and languages, unless you’d really like to!

50% Deposit

Step 2

Once you submit the briefing document, you’ll be prompted to pay the initial amount in order to kickoff the design process.

I’m perfectly happy for you to go through the briefing process in order to receive your Rapid Fire Briefing PDF (at least 5-10 people do this every week!), but please note I cannot begin work on your new logo until that deposit shows up on my end.

48hr Design Sprint

Step 3

From the moment I receive your confirmation email, my brain is laser focused on distilling everything you’ve told me into something truly unique and memorable.

Sometimes it comes to me immediately and sometimes it only reveals itself during the design process, but at some point during the next 48 hours, you’ll receive a link to a video of me walking you through a series of concepts for your new logo.

Around 75% of the time, we nail it on the first pass - in which case, all you need to do is pay the final 50% and boom! You’ll instantly receive access to a Google Drive folder overflowing with your sparkling new creative assets.

(If Required)

Rework

Obviously, it’s not always that easy!

Sometimes I miss a key detail during the discovery phase, or one idea I showed you in the first set of concepts has sparked off a totally different set of ideas.

This is a completely normal part of any creative endeavour, but I’m always mindful that you’re on a deadline here.

In the vast majority of cases (98.6%, last time I checked), I’ll make a few minor edits or we schedule a quick chat to go through some more specific changes and you’ll walk away with a big smile in just 36 hours from go to whoa.

In the extremely rare case that you’re still not perfectly happy with the results, you’re free to choose a third round of changes, or just say the word and I’ll refund your deposit straight back to you, no more questions asked.
